About this artwork

In “Back to Black,” Shartouh gathers four figures on a single line of balance, each caught in a quiet moment of reaching, offering, or simply being. Their forms, carved in deep black against a soft white field, feel like silhouettes of memory: light enough to drift, yet grounded by the weight of lived experience.
Touches of violet, a fluttering bird, and the tender bend of branches soften the composition, revealing a world where simplicity carries emotion and stillness becomes its own story. The contrast of black on white gives the work a timeless graphic strength, while the gestures of the figures add warmth and intimacy._
For collectors: A striking piece that lives between clarity and mystery — bold in presence, gentle in spirit.

About the Artist

Nawar Shartouh

Nawar Shartouh is a Syrian painter and printmaker based in Dubai. He graduated from the University of Damascus, where his foundation in printmaking shaped his precise, layered, and intentional approach to image-making.
Since establishing his studio in Dubai in 2021, his work has evolved within a contemporary curatorial context while retaining a quiet dialogue with Damascus, often guided by motifs such as jasmine and collective interior states expressed with tonal restraint.
He has presented his work in Cyprus and across the Middle East, including solo and group exhibitions in the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, and Syria.
