About this artwork
A portrait where adornment becomes restraint.
The figure meets us with a softened gaze—detached, almost inward—while a delicate, cage-like form wraps around her neck. What reads as a necklace shifts into something more ambiguous: protection or confinement, ornament or quiet control.
The vivid pink hair and flushed tones suggest vitality, yet her expression resists it—subtle, distant, withholding. The small green fish resting against her cheek introduces a surreal intimacy, as if thought or emotion has taken physical form, brushing against her without fully belonging.
The composition holds a quiet contradiction: softness against structure, presence against withdrawal.
About the Artist
Salam Ahmad, trained in Fine Arts in Syria, works through painting as an intimate, emotional language. Her compositions emerge from quiet inner spaces, where feelings take form before they are spoken. The body dissolves into sensation, and color, especially grey, becomes a field of reflection, suspended between presence and absence, fullness and emptiness.
